Sea Otter is a race and festival, but it’s also an informal bicycle tradeshow, with plenty of surprise new product announcements, including two new forks from Marzocchi. The Marzocchi 55 ATA will replace the 97 AM SL ATA. It’s an air fork with 55mm nickel-coated stanchions, Marzocchi’s ATA adjustment for 125mm to 165mm of travel, lock-out, TST Micro compression and rebound control, and a brand new 20mm QR axle. The 55 ATA weighs just 4.93 pounds (2240 grams).
Marzocchi’s new cross country fork, the XC 700 ATA, has their ATA adjuster for 100mm to 140mm of travel, the TST Micro rebound/compression control, lock-out, and 32mm nickel-coated stanchion tubes. It weighs in at 1700g / 3.74 lbs.
Last year I had Marzocchi’s AM SL ATA on my VP-Free for a few months. The ATA travel-adjust system works great and their air suspension feels so good now that I’m not even interested in coil suspension anymore. The new fork is much beefier, has a brand new QR 20mm axle, and Bryson Martin, CEO of Marzocchi USA, says it’s basically a 66 inside. I can’t wait to ride one.

Got a chance to ride the new 55 at Sea Otter and was extremely impressed (3hr tour around the XC course). Felt like 66 technology in a lightweight chassis without any diminished steering response. Simple to adjust for rider weight/style. Updated TST adjuster with ‘threshold’ knob is a very cool and useful feature. Everything you would want in an all-mountain platform: travel adjust, rebound, compression + lockout and lockout threshold, and air spring pressure. Great new lower leg and arch design, bigger 35mm stanchions, upgraded features (like the nickel-coated aluminum stanchions), and one of the coolest no-tool QR20 axles out there. Takes the Z1 and All-Mountain fork platforms to the next level of performance.

In reply to Rick: Well, let’s make a guess. If the new 55 really has 55 mm stanchions, what would be the diameter of the disc on the pic then…? 0-)
