One of the best prizes that we gave away in the Mtbr raffle, was a full carbon GT Force Expert mountain bike. While talking to Robb from GT, he introduced me to their Twitter Guy, Louis. Louis runs the demo program as well, and here are some photos of his home on wheels. Not a bad gig.
“GT - Cure For The Common Slow”
Louis is using Twitter to promote the cool new ad campaign called the GT Golden Bike. The Golden Bike is awarded to a racer, who must then defend his right to own the bike in each race. If he is defeated, the Golden Bike goes to a new owner…and so on.
In my discussion with Robb and Louis, I mentioned how I had read that Ashton Kutcher had just beat CNN in their Twitter Battle. The basis of this challenge was to see who could reach a million followers on Twitter first. To put this in perspective, I have been using the Mtbr Twitter site seriously since about February. So far, we have about 500 followers. The most popular bike related Twitter that I’ve ever seen, is Lance Armstrong’s Twitter with over 700,000 followers, with the “average” site being about 1000 followers. The Mtbr Twitter has a long way to go!
Also mentioned in this chat was how Oprah Winfrey is now on Twitter and how that may just mean that Twitter has officially Jumped The Shark. In any event, Twitter still remains a very useful and powerful tool for promotion.
Louis adds, “I use twitter for little quick updates from the road. I like to let people know what I am up to. if i am cleaning up and tuning bikes or stopped for gas is some strange little town. Just a quick little tweet and everyone knows whats going on. Its also nice letting people where I am and how my drives are going. It has also mad keeping in touch with my boss easier when all he has to do is look at a few of my last tweets and he knows where I am and what I am up to.”
“I like mostly that twitter can be done so quickly and easily. I just grab my iphone and tweet away. It makes it easy to post as things are happening. Like if there are 20 deer on the highway and can tell everyone exactly what I see.”
“I actually wish I could tweet a little more info. If I could do about 10-15 more characters I could really add more detail to the tweets. I am always go back and cutting things out to make the post small enough.”
Louis also likes the fact that you can link Twitter to your Facebook, where you post multiple images (on Twitter you can only post 1 photo per post) and more in-depth text.

I have known Michael Browne from his days at Dirt Rag. Michael has been working for Trek for a few years now, and he and I got a chance to chat a bit at the Trek World Racing Team booth. We actually talked more about our respective YouTube channels than Twitter, but Michael is also on twitter. Michael uses Twitter mostly for updates on his travels and how his team members are doing, providing real time results from practice, to qualifying, to the finals.

I’m sure there were plenty of other Twitter users out at Sea Otter, but the guys listed above are the ones I had the pleasure of chatting with.
So, well there are plenty of people using Twitter to blog about such inane things as what they ate for lunch or how they hate being stuck in traffic….there are many other interesting and valid reasons to start Twittering.
Twitter….what will YOU use it for?
