Sea Otter Takes a Few Giant Steps Toward Reducing its Carbon Footprint

Sea Otter’s Environmental Stewardship seeks to preserve Laguna Seca and Fort Ord

MONTEREY, Calif. (April 14, 2008) Quietly over the years, the Sea Otter Classic has managed to make great strides as a “green” event by reducing its carbon footprint. Now Sea Otter has become the model against which other events in the Monterey Bay area get measured. Partnerships with companies that have existing “green” initiatives already in place, likeWhat we're protecting Toyota, Clif Bar, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Pedro’s, become part of the process to achieving a more sustainable, more environmentally responsible event. New this year, Sierra Nevada has signed on as the “Official Recycling Sponsor” and who better to lead Sea Otter’s recycling efforts than a company that managed to divert 98.2 percent of total solid waste from landfill through recycling and reuse efforts during 2007.

“Recycling is something that we do naturally here at our plant,” said Cheri Chastain, sustainability coordinator for Sierra Nevada. “So going to and participating at events, we wanted to improve the recycle-ability of products, now it’s at the point where we can start expanding and doing these things at the events we’re attending.”

While recycling may be a small step, it is an important one. Sierra Nevada’s expressed goal for the Sea Otter Classic is to make recycling easy. Next to every trashcan there will be a recycling bin so, an impulsive action to chuck recyclables in the trashcan should be easy enough to divert to the recycling bin right next to it. Now how easy is that?

Chub Wheels make their world debut at the Sea Otter Classic

April 8, 2008 Petaluma, CA

Chub Wheels is proud to introduce a pair of highly engineered, elegantly constructed products for the single speed and fixed gear markets.

image022.jpg

First the revival of a legend: the Chub Fixed hub set.

Something wikked this way comes. Bred on the cobbled streets of Boston, the Chub Fixed hubs achieved cult status worldwide – now they’re back and bigger than ever! In the rear, mammoth aluminum flanges are bonded to a mighty carbon center tube. Giant flanges give spokes more mechanical advantage on the rim, decreasing spoke tension and wind-up. The ultra-rigid carbon tube transfers driving torque from the drive side flange to the non drive side, reducing peak spoke tension on the drive side by a staggering 70%.

Sea Otter Classic Challenges Participants with an Overflowing Activity Roster

Ryan Leech

Knowing the ropes, Ryan Leech suspends belief with his hard-won trials skills

MONTEREY, Calif. (March 13, 2008) Now more than ever before, Sea Otter Classic participants are faced with having to choose from an event schedule aimed at pleasing everyone. Live bands, recreational rides, beer and BBQ, the Mountain Bike Ride Zone, moto stunt shows, movie premiers, events for kids, and festival shows where “loop outs, x ups, augering, can-cans, and dumptrucks” become part of the dialect, pack a full roster of things to do at the 18th Annual Sea Otter Classic. If you thought that Sea Otter was only about BMX, road and off-road racing, which you can read about here, here and here, we’re just getting warmed up. Below is a guide to what else you have to choose from.

As always, entry to the Sea Otter Classic is free for kids 12 and under; military active duty, retired and families are two for one (50 percent off - ID card
required).

FESTIVAL SHOWS
Ryan Leech Trials Demos - Megawatt trials rider, Ryan Leech, returns this year to Sea Otter to perform daily shows that will no doubt inspire disbelief if he succeeds in riding such unreliable obstacles like chain links and eight centimeter cables. Leech will huck off obstacles, jump up onto barrels, perform jaw-dropping balancing acts, and generally stun spectators with his hard-won trials skills. He has performed thousands of trials shows all over the world and will be sharing his skills with the public throughout the festival. While chatting to the audience on his wireless mike, Leech will demonstrate his prowess by jumping and balancing his bike on a handcrafted course.

New Demo Area Steps Up Product Offerings at the Sea Otter Classic

Sea Otter Village

MONTEREY, Calif. (February 26, 2008) While the Sea Otter Classic has long been known as a “see-and-be-seen” event for athletes, the same could be said for manufacturers and their new products. Multiple companies like SRAM, Thule, Specialized, Clif, and Kenda will be releasing new, never-before-seen products to the public and media inside the Sea Otter Expo. Sea Otter has also taken a few extra steps this year to allow more Expo goers to test products. The Product demo area, located inside the Expo, will include several jumps, a pump track, as well as other bike handling skills attractions inside the BikeSkills Ride Zone. The demo area will be located proximate to both the acclaimed Fort Ord mountain bike trails and surrounding paved roads for those looking for an alternative to riding in the Ride Zone.
